The images are photos the artist specialises in which are differrent sort of style to other photographers as his photos have a odd style to them as instead of normal portraits where you can see the persons facial appearences the photographer makes portraits of an unusual set using facial coverings e.g. masks. The feeling the pictures give in a whole is a sense of fear as they look very scary due to the masks themselvess but also the actural way the artist has set the contrast and exposures in all of the pictures also helps with the feelings of a frighting image to look at and it can also be described as creepy aswell. The medium of the artist would be film cameras as they show a good technique to the photos and shows you very clearly a contrast between the shades of black and white.
James Rhem says in one of his quotes on the artist “Meatyard would put Halloween masks on his family and friends to release the ‘aroma of having a person, a human being in the picture, which stands for an entirely different thing than having a particular human being in the picture.’ The non-particularized human being presents an enigma at once grotesque, comic, mysterious and engaging, an enigma both attractive and repellent, one as likely to evoke a sympathetic response as apprehension. In the very process of destroying anonymity by denying particularity, the masks refuse to let us dismiss these figures as anonymous ‘other people.’ They become instead effigies of ourselves.”
I think the artist is trying to say to the person looking at the picture that everyone is the same on the inside and on the outside it doesant matter what you look like, i believe the masks are to show the sense of a random person and the fact that just because of what they look like they should not judge them because of it.
